CONSUMER ALERT: Clark Howard warns Tulsans before donating to Boston bombing victims

Scammers are preying on the generosity of everyday Americans in the wake of the Boston bombings to steal money.

KRMG asked consumer warrior Clark Howard how you can make sure your money gets to those who really need it. Clark says, "I could kiss you for asking me that question because this has been so upsetting to me."

According to Clark, scammers didn't waste any time. Clark says, "Did you know that within minutes of the terrorist attack Monday, 125 phony charity web sites were registered."

Clark suggests checking a few different web sites before you donate.

The three he recommends are:

  • CharityWatch is a charity rating and evaluation service dedicated to helping donors make informed giving decisions.
  • Charity Navigator, America's largest independent charity evaluator, provides free ratings of the Financial Health and Accountability & Transparency of thousands of America's largest charities.
  • Give.org is a web site run by the Better Business Bureau allowing you to check out a charity before giving.
