Comedian David Brenner, one of Johnny Carson’s favorite comedians, died Saturday, according to a spokesman for his family.
Brenner made more than 150 appearances as a guest and substitute host on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show,” starting in the 1970s.
Brenner had been a former documentary filmmaker before turning comedian.
Brenner’s brand of comedy inspired Jerry Seinfeld and Richard Lewis.
Howard Stern tweeted about Brenner on Saturday, “Keep David in your thoughts. Great guy ho was always encouraging and in my corner. I am so sad.”
Brenner, 78 years old, had been battling cancer and died peacefully at his home.
