Washington, D.C. - He says he doesn't agree with the President's plan on hiking taxes on the richest Americans.
But Oklahoma GOP Congressman Tom Cole says if he and his fellow lawmakers don't, then taxes will also go up for the other 98-percent of Americans, and it will look like the GOP's fault.
"If I can stop them on 98-percent of the people, and then continue to fight for the others, I will," Cole said on Fox's Neil Cavuto show.
Cole originally made his comments about going along with the President's plan, at least temporarily, in a closed-door meeting with his fellow Republicans and didn't expect them to be publicized.
"This was a comment made off the record in a whip conversation," he said. "They asked me 'what do you think', I said 'this is what I think'. It was leaked. That's fine. I'm quite happy to defend my position. But it's not as if I'm working against the Speaker or our conference, quite the opposite."
Cole said if Republicans don't support the President's plan for now, they'll run the risk of being perceived as holding 98-percent of Americans "hostage".
He made it clear that he doesn't think taxes should be raised on any Americans, even the wealthiest ones, and that he thinks it would be bad for the economy.
