Washington, D.C. - Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn gave a vigorous speech on the floor of the Senate Thursday, talking for more than half-an-hour, giving example after example where as many as 20 different agencies were doing the same thing and wasting taxpayer money in the process.
He dubbed the phenomenon "Duplication Nation".
And based on data he's gotten from the Congressional Budget Office, he estimates it's wasting as much as $200 billion every year.
"Thats $2 trillion over the next 10 years," he said. "That's 18 percent of our deficit this year, so the question you have to ask is, where's Congress? Why aren't they doing something on this?"
Coburn says it was a challenge just to get the information about the instances where agencies have duplicate programs and duplicate spending.
In fact, he said he's still waiting for about a third of the information he's requested.
