Rogers County, Okla. - Some KRMG listeners have been asking if it's illegal to carry very large amounts of cash, after Rogers County seized $50,000 in a traffic stop.
Technically the answer is "no."
But Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton says they had a good reason for seizing it.
"They claimed no ownership to it and signed affidavits to that effect, so that puts us in a position to seize that money and turn it over to the federal government," Walton said.
He said if they had earned the money legally, you can almost guarantee they would claim it.
He said the fact that people rarely carry that amount of money in cash and the fact that it was sealed in plastic also made it very suspicious.
