We want the North Pole, eh?
The move appears to be an effort to claim the area for future energy production.
It’s estimated the area around the geographic North Pole holds nearly one-fourth of the world's yet-to-be discovered energy resources.
The Globe and Mail reports Canada will send their application for that territorial claim to the United Nations later this week.
Rob Huebert is an Arctic expert at the University of Calgary. He told CTV Canada has good reason to expect their claim to be approved.
That opinion stems from underwater mountains that may extend Canada’s reach.
"If you look at what’s been coming out in terms of the science, there’s no question that our claim or our submission should have included the North Pole and in fact gone substantially beyond the North Pole."
But Santa is safe, at least for now.
It’s believed it will take years before the claim can be checked out with a decision as far as two decades away.
