The Merchant Marine Navy says so far the songs “Baby One More Time,” and “Oops! I Did It Again” have been the most successful in keeping the pirates at bay.
Rachel Owens is a merchant navy officer on tankers plying the waters near the African coast.
She told The Mirror “these guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect.”
The east African coast has long been a spot for pirates and their fast, armed skiffs.
In 2011 alone 176 ships were attacked with 25 of them being boarded and hijacked.
The British Royal Navy takes the threat seriously enough to have 1,500 sailors and 14 ships in the area 24/7.
Rachel said the music is not only effective, it’s benign to those on-board. “The speakers can be aimed solely at the pirates so as not to disturb the crew.
Even Rachel has been surprised at the difference the pop music has made.
“They’re so effective the ship’s security rarely needs to resort to firing guns, as soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney they move on as quickly as they can.”
It’s not the first time music has been used against bad guys.
