TULSA - Now the scene of tragedy, the Boston Marathon is a historic event, and the world's oldest annual marathon.
It began in 1897, and has always taken place on Patriot's Day, the third Monday in April.
It remains one of the world's best-known racing events, and is one of the six World Marathon Majors.
The event attracts an estimated half million spectators and roughly 20,000 participants annually.
It is considered New England's largest sporting event.
In 1996, the Centennial running of the Boston Marathon set records with 38,708 entrants, 36,748 starters, and 35,868 finishers.
