Attorney: Controversial lethal injection drug made in Tulsa

(St. Louis) – Cheryl Pilate, attorney for a Missouri death row inmate, says her research indicates the lethal injection compound, which will be used on her client, is made by The Apothecary Shoppe near 51st and Sheridan.

Pilate says an Oklahoma City-based lab tested the drug.

Her client, convicted killer Herbert Smulls, is scheduled to die at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

The lawyer says she's used open records requests and publicly available documents to determine the name of the compounding pharmacy she believes manufactures the lethal injection drug that will be used.

The controversy started after a couple of men complained of pain seconds after the drug was injected into their veins.

One of the men was from Tulsa.

State leaders say they don't plan to open an investigation.

A spokeswoman for The Apothecary Shoppes on Tuesday would neither confirm nor deny providing the drug.
