Road crews tore the ancient site apart with heavy construction equipment and kept reporters at bay by waving machetes.
The pyramid torn apart was estimated to be 2,300 years old and was one of the largest of its kind.
The pyramid and the surrounding structures are all on private land but that won’t stop legal action. The law in Belize protects ruins of this kind meaning charges could be filed.
A government archeologist told 7 News Belize "we can't salvage what has happened out here, it's an incredible display of ignorance."
He didn’t stop there. “”What the Maya built with stone tools and manual labor ages ago is being demolished with heavy equipment, because these contractors are too lazy to find a proper quarry."
