Ammunition explodes inside Jones-Riverside Airport hangar

Firefighters from Jenks and Tulsa battle a blaze at Riverside Airport after an explosion at a hanger.

Tulsa Fire Department Public Information Officer Gerry Tarver says the call came in about 1:30 this morning.

"Before we could really make that interior, we had several rounds of ammunition going off. They said it lasted about ten minutes before they could really get close."

Jenks resident Elmer Bell walked to the scene and was told that firemen were on the way.

"I heard a big loud thud going on and it about blew me out of bed. I figured it was probably an airplane had crashed over here or one of these hangars had blew up or something."

The explosion knocked some power lines down.

Tarver says it was about fifteen minutes after firefighters arrived before they could enter the hangar because ammunition that was stored inside kept exploding.

"There was a lot of ammunition in there. We held back because of that and we attacked from afar."

Tarver said no one was around the hangar and no airplanes were inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
