The research comes from the University of Utah and used mice for subjects.
The varmints were given a diet consisting of 25% sugar, for you and me that’s about three extra sodas per day.
The findings astounded the scientists involved in the project.
Male mice were much less likely to defend their territory or even try and reproduce.
It was even worse in females who were found to die twice as quickly as those without the sugar diet.
The text of the report puts it somewhat more scientifically.
"Added sugar consumed at concentrations currently considered safe exerts dramatic adverse impacts on mammalian health."
The Salt Lake Tribune reports one of the most alarming pieces of news is the National Research Council claims the same level of sugar in humans is safe.
Another surprise came when the mice weren't fatter than the normal mice.
The work was done on mice because their diet and ours have been similar for nearly 10,000 years.
Another close relationship comes as nearly 80% of what's toxic to them is toxic to us as well.
