One Houston first-grader will likely never draw on her desk again.
That’s because of the unusual punishment her teacher doled out over the minor classroom infraction.
According to the KHOU report, the girl’s family wishes to remain anonymous, but they are outraged by the teacher’s actions at Westwood Elementary. The girl’s mother says she received an email from the teacher about her daughter drawing a picture on her desk. Her mother was told that her daughter’s punishment was to lose recess time, visit the principal’s office and clean the desk.
The mother thought that was the end of the incident.
But when her daughter returned to school the next day, she found her desk had been removed. The teacher said she would not get her desk back until the start of second grade, forcing the girl to sit on the floor for the rest of the school year.
After sitting on the floor for over a month, the girl finally told her parents about the unusual punishment.
The girl’s mother has filed a grievance against the Spring Branch Independent School District and has retained an attorney.
The mother has transferred her daughter to another school for the upcoming school year.
The school district says they investigated the complaint and reprimanded the teacher.
