Big Splash owner Loretta Murphy hit the media circuit on Monday will a full PR assault on the reports that there are rotted timbers on some of the rides at Tulsa's water park.

From KRMG News:

Big Splash owner Loretta Murphy says the rotten beams, noted back in December by labor department inspectors, should have been replaced. In an interview with KRMG news Murphy said, "I make no excuses for it. I don't like to mess up and do anything wrong but it was my responsibility to change those out and those were not done before opening."

KRMG's Nicole Burgin and I talked to Loretta yesterday (Monday) just after lunchtime. You can here the full interview here.

Clearly Big Splash is seeking to manage the story ... retroactively.

Local media that all have the Big Splash story:

KTUL

Tulsa World

Not only did I ask Murphy about why the beams were not replaced in a timely fashion, but about the PR challenge posed by this story being out since late last week and not being addressed until Monday.

What others are saying

  • Big Splash fiasco a sign of things to come?
After the honchos at the fairgrounds booted Bell's out, I get more and more nervous when anyone mentions the name Murphy. In kicking Bell's out, whoever was responsible for doing so gave the Murphy family free reign over anything in the way of amusement rides. Now, we find out that Loretta Murphy has ownership in Big Splash? I guess the County Commissioners, the fairgrounds management, nor the Murphy family have heard of the need for competition? The departure of Bell's was toxic, meaning that anyone could ask any person aware of what happened, and it would be considered iffy. Now the Murphy family can't do as their told and replace a few pieces of wood at Big Splash? What's next? A ride going south at the fair? This bears watching by those vigilant among us, for I fear that this may be a sign of things to come.
